Human Sexual Polarity – The Tacit Conspiracy

The Tacit Conspiracy is not of ‘ignorance’, but of ‘silence’. ‘Breathing together’ implies a fully conscious relation’.

No male is merely male, no female merely female. Every human being possesses both male and female elements (yes, even scientifically)

Violence in relationships is possible where the male stress and the female stress is either unknown, or unbalanced, or both. Violence between the sexes is a ‘daily news bulletin’ item. Most people know of a friend who has been subjected to abuse. Knowledge is power to overcome.

Beyond the social problem now rife in our community, there is the ‘higher development function’ of The Tacit Conspiracy, the function which leads onwards and upwards to Reflexive Self-consciousness and Self-realisation. This is the aim of every true yogi.

Question: (written)

There is a scare about polio and a question of responsibility.

There are two concepts at war within me:

One seeking protection for the child and myself and,

The other which agrees with not perpetuating a state of chemical disequilibration.

The child wants to have injections, but this is because all the other children at school are having jabs. However, this is her decision and if we denied her inoculation and she caught polio she would define us as responsible and not response-able. Also, I would feel this.

Yet surely these continual inoculations against one thing and another are weakening the body’s resistance. Is one justified in making a stand when it involves another being?

EH response:

Well, apart from the last sentence all of this is particularised. But the last sentence is worth examining.

Is one justified in making a stand when it involves another being?

Is one justified in ‘making a decision’ for another being?

This can only mean for another being ‘unable to make a decision of its own’, in this case a child.

It might also refer to any being who is temporarily too weak to make a decision for itself, whether it’s a child or a sick person, either physically sick or mentally sick. At some point in our lives we are faced with the problem of making a decision for another being. This is just a particular case of ‘are we justified in making decisions involving the lives of other beings?’

Well here we have to enter into the zone where we must take a ‘risk’ one-way or the other. In the particular case, certain bodies of people want ‘wholesale inoculations against a given disease’. First of all their statements about these inoculations are not strictly scientific. They’re supposed to be statistical, but in fact they make these statements before they have inoculated a sufficient number of people to know whether the thing is justified or not.

In the spirit of empirical science they make their propaganda to get a sufficient number of people to be treated in this way before they have any statistics. If they can’t persuade people to be inoculated then they can’t gather the statistics. So they always make statements, which initially are questionable, about the validity of these drugs – and we know in the case of this particular drug in America, on one occasion it killed 400 children. It has killed others since.

Now no two people are exactly the same chemical balance of forces, or the same psychological system, and therefore no two people respond in precisely the same way to the same stimulus. Consequently, it becomes a question of a person ‘making a decision’.

Now if an individual makes a decision for himself about what he shall and shall not do, and the decision affects nobody else, then he has no legitimate ground of complaint if he suffers as a result of his own decision.

Then when we come to make a decision about another person, the problem is raised ‘are we justified in making a decision which might lead to suffering for another being, or even to the death of another being?’

The answer is here;

How much courage has one got?

How much faith has one got?

The empirical scientist, when they start these methods, simply have ‘faith’ in the empirical method. Not ‘faith that it will succeed’, but ‘faith that it will give information about the validity or otherwise of the given procedure’.

They don’t have faith in ‘the outcome as good or bad’.

They have faith that ‘there will be an outcome and that this outcome can be statistically evaluated’.

But statistics cannot tell you what is going to happen to ‘a given individual’.

Now there are two schools of thought about injecting alien substances into the body.

  1. One of them is allied to the ‘shock theories’ which says if you give the organism a big enough shock it might pull itself together and ‘fight to defend itself’.
  2. And the other one is that you ‘shouldn’t give shocks to the organism greater than it can stand’.

In the case of new drugs for injection against diseases, because they are new we haven’t sufficient statistics to say whether they are valid or not. And so there’s an element of risk. We have to make a decision.

Now another part of this question says ‘the child wants to have the injections because the other children at school are having them’.

Now this is a natural thing. But supposing your child goes to school and finds that some of the kiddies have discovered a dirty hole in the ground and are playing a game called ‘shops’ where they’re selling mud pies and eating them and the result is that there’s an outbreak of some particular disease, perhaps typhoid or something. Do you say then that the child has a right to a decision in such a case?

Well it depends what kind of a person you are – what you think ‘response-ability’ is.

Normally, if you want your child to survive, you will become quite firm when the child makes a decision to do something which you have good grounds for believing to be bad for it. And on this point the question of the child’s ‘free decision’ is examined very carefully, and it is seen that the child in fact hasn’t got a free decision because its decision has been conditioned by other factors. A child’s so-called ‘decision’ has been influenced in this case by other children at school and they have been influenced, directly or indirectly, by the propaganda of the men who are seeking ‘statistics’ about a given drug.

So it isn’t correct to say that the child has made a ‘free decision’ to have an injection.

The decision has been ‘imposed’ on the child.

And the question is ‘whether you, as the mother of the child, feel that you should allow other people to condition your child’s behaviour’,

Or ‘whether it is your duty as a parent to undertake to condition that behaviour yourself’.

Now it’s a very serious problem because it says ”IF this child is denied inoculation, IF she gets the disease, then she would define us as responsible”.

IF! IF! IF! This great mysterious “IF”.

In the name of this IF, people have been terrified for thousands of years.

I draw a chalk line round a hen, and I put the hen’s beak on the line and then move the hen round the chalk line with its beak on the line a few times, then I stand the hen inside the circle. The hen then shows, by its behaviour, that it can’t get out of the circle. It’s been ‘hypnotised’ by the line and the repetition of the stimulus.

Now, IF the hen had enough intelligence to know that the chalk line hasn’t got any height to stop it treading over it.

IF the hen had enough intelligence to know that you’ve been trying a dirty conditioning trick on it, then it would walk across the line.

And IF it hasn’t, then it doesn’t.

And in the same way when you are talking in any field and you use “IF” you are introducing ‘guesses’, hypothesis, with which you can frighten yourself and paralyse your own ‘will’, and your own ‘courage’ to ‘risk’. Life is a ‘risk’. When you make a decision of any kind, you are ‘risking’.

Supposing you don’t have your child inoculated, and supposing the child then develops a disease.

Is that a proof that the child developed the disease ‘because’ it was not inoculated?

Not at all.

Because there are thousands, millions of people in the country [UK] who are not being inoculated, who will not get the disease, because even statistically the number of people who get that disease is not sufficiently great for you to be able to say that your child should get it if not inoculated.

The whole of ‘statistics’ in cases of ‘individual disease’ is valueless. It can say nothing about it.

On the other hand if the child is inoculated and dies then you will feel responsible.

There was a kiddie died here, wasn’t there; when was it, yesterday or the day before? Just recently.

Of course the people ‘for’ [in favour of] the injection say “this had nothing to do with the injection”.

People ‘against’ the injection will interpret it that “the child died as a result of the injection”.

It may have done. It may not.

If the parents think the injection ‘dangerous’, they can in fact infect the ‘feeling’ of the child and make the child produce symptoms.

If the parents think that the thing is ‘not dangerous’ there’s a high degree of probability that this suggestion will make the child ‘immune’ to the damaging effects of the inoculation.

The really important thing is the question of ‘positivity’ and ‘negativity’ in the situation.

The fact that millions of people who are not inoculated ‘don’t get it’, shows that there is no guarantee if somebody doesn’t get it that they’ve had an inoculation.

If a person hasn’t got it, it doesn’t mean they’ve had an inoculation.

If a person has an inoculation it doesn’t mean you won’t get it.

So that you have to ‘evaluate these things very carefully’ and then decide whether in the given case, namely the ‘individual case’, you are being ‘driven by propaganda’ to do something for which there is ‘no statistical justification’. And there is no statistical justification, at the moment, for such inoculations. If they were to make world-wide inoculations and after they had made them, then there were no more cases of polio that year, it wouldn’t prove that the inoculations had stopped it. Because the thing [polio] in any case is rhythmical. It appears during certain periods of time and then it disappears. We have waves of these things. So there’s no ‘necessary causal connection’ between the inoculations and the disappearance of a disease.

But the ‘empirical mentality’, the Cainish mind, is very busy trying to find a ‘material means’ of controlling what in effect is ‘highly dynamic vital substance’, namely ‘intelligence’. The pursuit of a ‘material’ substance that can solve the problems of the diseases of human beings is the pursuit of a fantasy.

I don’t know whether you’ve noticed one or two fairly intelligent articles recently. There was one last week in The Observer by Arthur Koestler. There was one the previous week. And the evidence is piling up that large numbers of symptoms are produced by ‘suggestion’. By doctors, by nurses and so on. By reading, by looking at TV shows, theatre, cinema and so on. That the human mind is somehow very very ‘impressionable’ and can turn all sorts of stimuli into ‘chemical conditions’ and produce ‘symptoms’ out of a ‘mere verbal statement’. This is a fact. It is revolutionising medicine today. Psychosomatic medicine that would have been frowned on 70 years ago is a la mode. But that doesn’t mean that it is necessarily true, because there are fashions.

But it is certainly a ‘fact’ that physical symptoms are produced under ‘hypnosis’ and without hypnosis by ‘suggestion’, and by dummy capsules, dummy pills, which have none of the materials in them they are supposed to have. And that the whole question of ‘physical causation’ is ‘in the melting pot’.

Because in fact we cannot eliminate a factor which is most determinant, namely the consciousness’ of the human being. And the fact that this consciousness has the power to ‘interpret’ stimuli, and therefore in the act of interpreting them, to ‘distort’ their effects within the body.

I can write X on a piece of paper. I can show it to a small child. And I can hit the child with a stick at the moment I show it X. And after I have done this a few times, 10 years later if I should put X on a piece of paper before that child, it may get a headache or a pain in the knuckle bone.

This kind of thing happens, and it happens so often that we have to admit that the protoplasm of which we are made has this peculiar power of ‘retaining impressions’, ‘storing them up’ and then ‘producing reactions to them’ at a later date, when only a symbol of the original situation is presented.

A physical pain is given. Now at the moment of pain, consciousness shuts down. If at the moment of pain you also give with it a symbol, say the letter X or anything else you care to choose, later on the presentation of this mere symbol will induce a re-stimulation of the pain. This is a fact. And it’s a fact not for some, but for all living beings. There is no protoplasm, that is say ‘no living substance at all in the world’, that doesn’t respond in this way to painful stimuli. It retains the impressions of them, and produces reactions when re-stimulated. And because of this peculiar fact we cannot say when materials are used to deal with symptoms, whether those materials have anything to do with the ‘effect’ at all. We can put drugs into certain people and tell them that “those are not drugs”, that “they are vitamins”, and then the people don’t feel drugged. And we can give them a bit of liquorice water and tell them that “it is radio-active and should produce a tingling in the nerves in the thighs”, and then they promptly have ‘tingling in the nerves of the thighs’. The tissues can reproduce any kind of symptom under the appropriate stimulus condition.

As these are facts, they have to be added into this question of responsibility.

Supposing your child says “I consider it a matter of ‘life’ and ‘death’ to me that I have this injection”.

And you’re [as the parent] in the position of either believing that the child believes this, believing itself, and [you as the parent] saying “alright, when you are injected then, according to you, you’re going to die”, or “you’re not going to die”, which ever you prefer to choose.

When you’ve decided this, if you decide that ‘not being injected causes your death’, I’ll say “ok well I don’t allow you to be injected and you can now die”.

“Who is responsible you or I?”

‘You’re willing to die if you don’t get injected’ and ‘I’m willing that you’re not injected, and then you die’.

“Is it my fault or yours?”

Well, obviously it’s the fault of the person who is doing the greatest amount of ‘willing’, that is, the dominant personality.

If you talk to a child in such a case and say:

“You want to be inoculated because all of the other kids want to be inoculated. And they want to be inoculated because they are not able to tell the facts of the case. ‘But they all want to belong to a little body, an age of little children. They want to be in the swim.”

“And there are some other men, very cunning men, who make propaganda for various ideas, and these men want to collect ‘information’. To get this information they cut open frogs and mice and rabbits and dogs and cats, and they give them electric shocks and they give them poisons and they give them cancers and they cut pieces out of their brains, all to get ‘information’. And these same men are now coming along to inoculate you, to get some ‘information’.”

Now at this point the child will look rather worried.

Now the question is, ‘are you justified in worrying the child in such a way that you might give it something worse than polio?’

That is, you might give it such a fear, of ‘empirical scientist methods’, that it might start panicking and running all over the place every time it saw a polio ad.

So you see what is wanted is ‘an intelligent mode of dealing with the situation’.

You are responsible already.

You’re responsible for the existence of your child, in so far as you had anything to do with it deliberately, which means ‘very little’ [to do with it, in a ‘deliberate’ way].

And having discovered this degree of responsibility, you can then decide whether you want ‘further responsibility’.

If you explain very carefully to the child that ‘this particular drug has not yet been proved, and it’s just an experiment and they’ve got to give it to a large number of people in order to become convinced about whether it works’.

And that ‘a large number of people does not prove that it will work with one person’.

And then you say to this child;

“Would you prefer to be free, or bound?

“Would you prefer to have people pull your leg, or not?

“Would you like other people to be able to trick you into doing things, or not?”

If the child says “I don’t want to be tricked”, [you] say, “Well in effect this propaganda is a trick. Now do you want to be tricked or not?

Now if you’re ‘sure’ of your ground, your ‘surety’ is the ‘security’ of the child.

At a certain point the child now wants in, and will say “well I want to be free, I don’t want to be tricked”.Are you going to be done mummy?”.

And you say “No” (trembling with fright in case you drop dead – [ spoken humorously] ).

You see. And she’s so inspired by your confidence, she says “Neither will I”. (And then you both drop dead [said humorously] )

If you do [drop dead], it doesn’t really matter because it means ‘you are sufficiently negative to deserve a ticket into the next world’.

But if you can find sufficient ‘positivity’ in yourself to do it, then there is no more danger of your child getting polio than there was before this propaganda started. Which means statistically very very very very little.

And as ‘statistics’ in any case doesn’t apply to your child, it means nothing at all.

If you talk to the child intelligently and confidently about it, you will win its confidence and then you can both decide whether or not it’s going to be done.

One thing is certain, and that is, that the empirical scientists ‘still know very very little about ‘individual’ reactions to drugs’.

Truth and the Cross of Easter

Truth-image-web To Pilate’s question, “What is Truth? ” Jesus made no reply not because he couldn’t but because debating the nature of Truth with Pilate might have delayed, or even made impossible the crucifixion; and Jesus had, for this very thing, “steadfastly set his face towards Jerusalem”. 

Jesus could have replied to Pilate, “Truth is the form of the Infinite Reality”. Pilate, as an educated man, would have known enough Greek philosophy to have appreciated the nature of the reply. He would have known that the forms of reality are apprehended by the intellect, and that the intellect works by defining the application of terms. He would have known, therefore, that Reality, if infinite, would require an infinity of definitions. He would therefore, either have dropped the question; or entered into an interminable discussion about the subject, which would indefinitely have postponed the crucifixion. Jesus’ silence took the problem out of Pilate’s hands, although Pilate’s later symbolic hand-washing suggests his own uneasiness about it. 

The silence of Jesus allowed the machinery of man’s law to carry him swiftly to the cross. We, who are not in such a hurry to hang in the same way, may have enough time to consider some of the aspects of the Infinite Reality he had no time to discuss. 

Reality has many aspects but there are certain obvious ones which may profitably claim our attention. Early philosophy considered Reality under three main aspects, the True, the Beautiful, and the Good; or Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Historically these three have engaged the attention of thinkers to a remarkable degree. Why has this been so?

Work on Self, Breaking identification, Self confrontation,

Four component ashram –

  1. Solitude in Hermitage – contingent stimuli withdrawal,
  2. Communal ashram – three stages (refuges in Wisdom/Law/Community), Part of it all, Appetite – God pouring God into God,
  3. City community – Here and Now is always ‘First Time’, Pull of service – Full Up with Knowledge
  4. Other ways of achieving consciousness – “the only thing you have to offer another human being, ever, is your own state of being”, Doing your own being – the only dance there is.

Mantra – Om Mani Padme Hum – stages – hear it, think it, sound it, feel it [stages move from ‘ears’ to ‘mind’ to ‘throat’ to ‘heart’]

Mandala – Tonka

Faith healer – what a Faith healer does is use his own vibrational rate to bring you to another vibrational rate.

Pranayama – breath of Yogi gets very gentle, delicate and faint – breath is the environment in which consciousness is living all the time, very intimate.

Food, Love, Mantra – “Don’t eat any food that isn’t cooked with Love and with Mantra, because it will poison you. The vibrations of a person cooking food enter into the food when it is cooked over fire.

America and LSD – “LSD is like a Christ coming to America in the Kali-Yuga

EXERCISE: look at the point between the eyebrows (slightly above), and chant the Mantra Om Mani Padme Hum inwardly.

Truth is an absolute prerequisite in the Dance.

Guts ballgame: “anything you can think, feel, desire, fear, anything you can bring to your mind about any of these, that you have difficulty with, are embarrassed by, are made uncomfortable by sharing with me – share it with me

Therapist rule: “Work on yourself, because your ‘patients’ will be as free as you are.


  1. first = survival of the individual as a separate being – survival of the fittest;
  2. second = sensual gratification and sexual desires and reproduction
  3. third = power, with mastery, with ego control – ‘my’ way not the ‘High’ way.
  4. fourth = unity [really, ‘non-duality’] of nature and compassion where that compassion is the compassion that what is happening to you is happening to me, because in that place you and I are a unitive[non-dual] being
  5. fifth = turning back inward, deeper within, subtler forms of energy [sound as a formative agent – shabda brahman]
  6. sixth = first thought forms of which all the rest is manifestation. The realm of pure ideas. No longer identified with body or personality.
  7. seventh = merging back into the oceanic[dalai], into the one [not-two]. The water in the raindrop is the same in the ocean as in the mist as in the cloud as in the river. Behind all the laws and ideas, [is the ocean of infinite absolute sentient power – pure Shiva Shakti].

Chakra Work = take energy from a lower centre and move it into a higher centre[and vice versa for manifestation]. The final place you end up coming to is where you complete the cycle and you come back into every plane and you live consciously at every plane, because every plane is another truth – the Saint’s and Bodhisattvas role living in this world of illusion at the same time that you are not in the world of illusion, because you are fully conscious of the seventh chakra also. That is, you are conscious right across the planes simultaneously.

Freud (belly), Jung (chest), Adler (head)

Evolution of man’s vehicle of consciousness is inevitable – nothing he can do about it, no choice, wake at your own rate.

Three bodies – gross (physical body), subtle (personality, emotions, thinking mind), causal (Plato’s pure ideas) – pyramid with causal/subtle/gross (top to bottom). Behind the causal is a homogeneous field – fourth.

Hindu system – Brahman becomes three: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, – creator, preserver, destroyer or changer

Vishnu has a number of incarnations – Krishna, Ram, Buddha – Ram is Karma yoga

The only option is to work on yourself – up levelling; Growth of Consciousness – how quickly you can give up on a past model so you can ‘be here now’. Breaking identification with self-imposed limit, up-level self-predicament,

Christ – “lay not up your treasures where moth and rust doth corrupt”.

Everything passes, so ‘break identification’. (second most beautiful girl in the world is inevitable)

You have to give up being the ‘experimenter’ to have the experience of the ‘transcendence of experimenter–ness’

You can only know you know after you’ve been it … And in order to be it you’ve got to give up knowing you know.

To know the transcendent, give up the rational mind – transcend the knower who knows something (and become the reflexive knower).

No need to give up Western training, just give up the “attachment” to Western training. “Give up a western predisposition in order to experience another system at the being-level, in order to bring it back. – Richard Wilhelm”

Jnana Yoga – yoga of the rational mind beating itself – which is part of the Zen koan – demand exquisite discipline of the rational mind

Truth is everywhere, right where you are, when you can see it, when you can open to it.


Ch. Two (responses to questions)

“You have to risk it all, to have it all” – you’ve got to give it all up to have it all. [Christ – “give up all you’ve got and follow me”]

“Embrace your 10,000 horrible demons and your 10,000 beautiful demons” – Tibetan. You’ve just got to take it all and keep going. All your fears have to be embraced, entertained, honoured, and you go on with them. [the man who wins through carries on with a defective engine]

Christ love = the state of being where one “is” love. [Compared to, “having” love] as long as you are under the illusion that what you are loving is “out there,” you will always experience that separateness. It is only when you begin to understand that if you and I are truly in love, if I go to the place in me that is love and you to the place in you that is love, we are “together” in Love.

The game of enlightenment starts from exactly where you are at this moment; with your contracts (social–sexual–emotional). You can’t walk away from anything, any part of your life. You’ve got to bring it all into harmony at every new level.

The I Ching is a very high statement of how it all is, and it can be used very cautiously and consciously to ‘wake you up’ to ‘other perspectives’ of “where you are at in the here and now” – a statement of where you are here and now at this moment in your consciousness when you are asking the question. Rule: Ask the right question in the first place.

There is no being at any state of consciousness that one cannot make contact with if one is free of attachment to any specific plane of consciousness. Rule: breaking identification with current limit is pre-requisite.

As therapist: identify with Intelligence at Centre, and talk to that.

Western education: phoney hype, and has nothing to do with anything. There are other ways of relating to the universe.

The place you are going to is the transcendence of the experience of separateness so that you are power … “Had ye but faith ye could move mountains”. [identify with the mountain, and move]

Don’t use your powers, let them go. Upsetting balances in the universe is very destructive if there is no understanding of it All.

Despair [de pair, desperation – ‘opening you up to the whole’, actual transcendence] is a necessary prerequisite for the next degree of consciousness

“Not mine, but Thy will be done” – perfect Karma yoga – universal.

Nada Yoga – listening to the sounds in the nadis – sound vibrations manifesting as form and colour.

“The highest response I can get from an audience now is where they see that what I have been talking about is inside themselves, and that I was just a vehicle for them to hear.”

A relationship is as high as the highest consciousness in the relationship.

Develop “one pointedness” of mind and will and consciousness – this is the purpose of the dharma(duty) of discipline, whatever the discipline is, the discipline is with this purpose.

True Education – where the student is never under the impression that he is being taught anything from outside, because he is being taught from inside himself. Working from inside the student’s framework, the student evolves. Example: hanging out with a child and saying “okay, now what?” The child already knows everything and my job on myself is to thin the veils that keep me from knowing it all, and to not contribute to increasing the veils that keep him(student) from knowing it all. So we sit, and say “let us start from exactly where we are at. All truth is in everything. There is no pre-programmed model in my head that is that vital including any books, any subjects, because I am now awed by an interesting phenomenon that I’ve begun to see.” Surround the students with as high a consciousness as possible, and invite development(unfolding) of the universe within them. The educator educates himself and then he hangs out with the child and the child gets free of the things that are keeping him from educating himself because, in effect, we only do it(education) to ourselves. We don’t do it to each other, we only do it to ourselves. All you can do is provide an environment where the kid can do it to himself. The classroom is as high as the highest being in the room. And sometimes that’s not the teacher. It could be a kid. Everybody is a Buddha. We need to train for wisdom, not knowledge (knowledge is measurable). Knowledge is not convertible, necessarily, into human happiness or well-being. Wisdom is, because wisdom is learning how to live with the Tao, to live in harmony with the world at the moment it is. Wisdom is a totally adaptive thing, but knowledge isn’t. Wisdom deals with what is. You teach methods of absorbing knowledge. You don’t teach knowledge per se. Present models of consciousness, not models of external achievement. Ontogeny(individual) recapitulates Phylogeny(type/species/race/tribe), so each person’s journey into consciousness recapitulates all of man’s journey into consciousness. Man has to re-find the need to absorb music and art and history and literature. You can’t lay it on him because you know it’s important. He’s got to be ready to hear it. Namaste, “I honour the Atman within you, I honour the light that is within you”, meaning, I look into you for that place where we are, behind all of our individual differences.

Our Enemies

The following is a list of the forces arrayed against us as artists and entrepreneurs:

  1. Resistance (i.e., fear, self-doubt, procrastination, addiction, distraction, timidity, ego and narcissism, self-loathing, perfectionism, etc.)
  2. Rational thought
  3. Friends and family


What exactly is this monster? The following few chapters from The War of Art will bring us up to speed:

Resistance’s Greatest Hits

The following is a list, in no particular order, of those activities that most commonly elicit Resistance:

  1. The pursuit of any calling in writing, painting, music, film, dance, or any creative art, however marginal or unconventional.
  2. The launching of any entrepreneurial venture or enterprise, for profit or otherwise.
  3. Any diet or health regimen.
  4. Any program of spiritual advancement.
  5. Any activity whose aim is the acquisition of chiselled abdominals.
  6. Any course or program designed to overcome an unwholesome habit or addiction.
  7. Education of every kind.
  8. Any act of political, moral, or ethical courage, including the decision to change for the better some unworthy pattern of thought or conduct in ourselves.
  9. The undertaking of any enterprise or endeavour whose aim is to help others.
  10. Any act that entails commitment of the heart—the decision to get married, to have a child, to weather a rocky patch in a relationship.
  11. The taking of any principled stand in the face of adversity.

In other words, any act that rejects
immediate gratification in favour
of long-term growth, health, or

Or, expressed another way, any act that derives from our higher nature instead of our lower. Any of these acts will elicit Resistance.

Now: what are the characteristics of Resistance?

Resistance Is Invisible

Resistance cannot be seen, heard, touched, or smelled. But it can be felt. We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential.

Resistance is a repelling force. It’s
negative. Its aim is to shove us
away, distract us, prevent us from
doing our work.

Resistance Is Insidious

Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work. It will perjure, fabricate, falsify; seduce, bully, cajole. Resistance is protean. It will assume any form, if that’s what it takes to deceive you.

Resistance will reason with
you like a lawyer or jam a nine-millimetre
in your face like a stickup man.

Resistance has no conscience. It will pledge anything to get a deal, then double-cross you as soon as your back is turned. If you take Resistance at its word, you deserve everything you get.

Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.

Resistance Is Impersonal

Resistance is not out to get you personally. It doesn’t know who you are and doesn’t care. Resistance is a force of nature. It acts objectively.

Though it feels malevolent,
Resistance in fact operates with
the indifference of rain and
transits the heavens by the same
laws as stars. When we marshal
our forces to combat Resistance,
we must remember this.

Resistance Is Infallible

Like a magnetized needle floating on a surface of oil, Resistance will unfailingly point to true North—meaning that calling or action it most wants to stop us from doing.

We can use this.

We can use it as a compass.

We can navigate by Resistance, letting it guide us to that calling or purpose that we must follow before all others.

Rule of thumb: The more
important a call or action is to
our soul’s evolution, the more
Resistance we will feel toward
pursuing it.

Resistance Is Universal

We’re wrong if we think we’re the only ones struggling with Resistance. Everyone who has a body experiences Resistance.

Resistance Never Sleeps

Henry Fonda was still throwing up before each stage perfor­mance, even when he was seventy-five.

In other words, fear doesn’t go
away. The warrior and the artist
live by the same code of necessity,
which dictates that the battle must
be fought anew every day.

Resistance Plays for Keeps

Resistance’s goal is not to wound or disable.

Resistance aims to kill.

Its target is the epicentre of our being: our genius, our soul, the unique and priceless gift we were put on this earth to give and that no one else has but us. Resistance means business.

When we fight it, we are in a war to the death.

Rational Thought

Next to Resistance, rational thought is the artist or entrepre­neur’s worst enemy.

Bad things happen when we employ rational thought, because rational thought comes from the ego.

Instead, we want to work from the Self,

that is, from instinct and

intuition, from the unconscious.

Homer began both The Iliad and The Odyssey with a prayer to the Muse. The Greeks’ greatest poet understood that genius did not reside within his fallible, mortal self—but came to him instead from some source that he could neither command nor control, only invoke.

When an artist says “Trust the soup’ ” she means let go of the need to control (which we can’t do anyway) and put your faith instead in the Source, the Mystery, the Quantum Soup.

The deeper the source we work from, the better our stuff will be—and the more transformative it will be for us and for those we share it with.

Friends and Family

The problem with friends and family is that they know us as we are. They are invested in maintaining us as we are.

The last thing we want is to remain as we are.

If you’re reading this book, it’s because you sense inside you a second self, an unlived you.

With some exceptions (God bless them), friends and family are the enemy of this unmanifested you, this unborn self, this future being.

Prepare yourself to make new friends.

They will appear, trust me.

Resistance and Sex

(from The War of Art – Pressfield, 2002)

Sometimes Resistance takes the form of sex, or an obsessive preoccupation with sex. Why sex? Because sex provides immediate and powerful gratification. When someone sleeps with us, we feel validated and approved of, even loved. Resistance gets a big kick out of that. It knows it has distracted us with a cheap, easy fix and kept us from doing our work.

Of course not all sex is a manifestation of Resistance. In my experience, you can tell by the measure of hollowness you feel afterward. The more empty you feel, the more certain you can be that your true motivation was not love or even lust but Resistance.

It goes without saying that this principle applies to drugs, shopping, masturbation, TV, gossip, alcohol, and the consumption of all products containing fat, sugar, salt, or chocolate.

Enough for now about the antagonists arrayed against us. Let’s consider the champions on our side:

  1. Stupidity
  2. Stubbornness
  3. Blind faith
  4. Passion
  5. Assistance (the opposite of Resistance)
  6. Friends and family

Stay Stupid

The three dumbest guys I can think of: Charles Lindbergh, Steve Jobs, Winston Churchill. Why? Because any smart person who understood how impossibly arduous were the tasks they had set themselves would have pulled the plug before he even began.

Ignorance and arrogance are the artist and entrepreneur’s in­dispensable allies. She must be clueless enough to have no idea how difficult her enterprise is going to be—and cocky enough to believe she can pull it off anyway.

How do we achieve this state of mind? By staying stupid. By not allowing ourselves to think.

A child has no trouble believing
the unbelievable, nor does the
genius or the madman. It’s only
you and I, with our big brains and
our tiny hearts, who doubt and
overthink and hesitate.

Don’t think. Act.

We can always revise and revisit once we’ve acted. But we can accomplish nothing until we act.

Be Stubborn

Once we commit to action, the

worst thing we can do is to stop.

What will keep us from stopping? Plain old stubbornness.

I like the idea of stubbornness because it’s less lofty than “tenac­ity” or “perseverance.” We don’t have to be heroes to be stub­born. We can just be pains in the butt.

When we’re stubborn, there’s no quit in us. We’re mean. We’re mulish. We’re ornery.

We’re in till the finish.

We will sink our junkyard-dog
teeth into Resistance’s ass and not
let go, no matter how hard he kicks.

Blind Faith

Is there a spiritual element to creativity? Hell, yes.

Our mightiest ally (our
indispensable ally) is belief in
something we cannot see, hear,
touch, taste, or feel.

Resistance wants to rattle that faith. Resistance wants to destroy it.

There’s an exercise that Patricia Ryan Madson describes in her wonderful book, Improv Wisdom. (Ms. Madson taught impro­visational theatre at Stanford to standing-room only classes for twenty years.) Here’s the exercise:

Imagine a box with a lid. Hold the box in your hand. Now open it.

What’s inside?

It might be a frog, a silk scarf, a gold coin of Persia. But here’s the trick: no matter how many times you open the box, there is always something in it.

Ask me my religion. That’s it.

I believe with unshakeable
faith that there will always be
something in the box.


Picasso painted with passion, Mozart composed with it. A child plays with it all day long.

You may think that you’ve lost your
passion, or that you can’t identify
it, or that you have so much of it, it
threatens to overwhelm you. None
of these is true.

Fear saps passion.

When we conquer our fears, we discover a boundless, bottom­less, inexhaustible well of passion.


We’ll come back to this later. Suffice it to say for now that as Resistance is the shadow, its opposite—Assistance—is the sun.

Friends and Family

When art and inspiration and success and fame and money have come and gone, who still loves us—and whom do we love?

Only two things will remain with
us across the river: our inhering
genius and the hearts we love.

In other words, what we do and whom we do it for.

But enough theory. In the next chapter we’ll start our novel, kick off our new business, launch our philanthropic enterprise.

Our 15th Year – 2015


Tomorrow is the beginning of our 15th year of teaching here at Melbourne Yoga Meditation Centre. Fifteen is the number of substantial embodiment in existence. It’s the marriage of spirit in earth in a non-dual infinite continua. The earth is an aspect of an infinite continua, not separate. What we do to the earth, we do to ourselves, what we do to ourselves we do to others. There’s no escape. Everything is a knock-on and everything comes back. To the extent we believe we are ‘separate’ then to that degree we suffer. The only differences we share are a function of ‘stress accent’, the emphasis we place on what we prefer, our preferred choice. On 18 Jan we will look at this in our first workshop for 2015 – The Wheel of Life http://melbourneyoga.com/workshops.
In Sanskrit there is a word ‘SVABHAVA’ – which means “WE BECOME WHAT WE ARE BY THE CHOICES WE MAKE”.

Man has a Choice of HOW he will live his life

from the teachings of Eugene Halliday

We must choose whether we will think of ourselves as

  1. simply mechanical products of the Time-process, with no meaning beyond Time;
  2. or we must know that we are beings whose real origin is in the Eternal, beyond Time, in the infinite loving presence of God.

If we were really only Time-beings, we would have no possibility of knowing any Eternal truths. We would know only the sequence of linear events of the fleeting moments of Time. We would be carried along remorselessly by the movement of Time, from our birth, with only chaos before it, to our death, with only chaos and annihilation after it.

But if we are beings of Eternity, we pre-exist our birth and post-exist our death. From God’s Eternal Love we come, and back into God’s Eternal Love we go. Time, for us, is just an interlude between the “out” and “in” doorways of Eternity.

What, then, does Time really mean for us? It is the period of our being in which we experience the possibilities of an infinite number of ways of being, but in a linear, sequential manner, a manner which allows us to look at each of our actions separately, in isolation, so that we can assess each action that we do as it is in itself, uncoloured by other possibilities.

We have two minds;

  1. A linear thinking mind that experiences its ideas one after the other, in sequence;
  2. And a pattern-comprehending mind that holds all its ideas in one instant grasp.

The linear thinking mind is our Time mind.

The pattern comprehending mind is our Eternal mind.

These two minds act in quite different ways, and have quite different results from their actions.

The Time mind is riddled with anxiety; the Eternal mind lives in quiet faith.

We can live our life in either of our two minds.

  1. If we choose to consider only the affairs of time, we thereby bind ourselves into the anxieties which are the natural accompaniments of time thinking.
  2. If we choose to live in the consciousness of Eternity, which we call the “Mind of Christ”, then we are lifted above the anxieties of the Time process into the Eternal Presence of God. In this Presence our confidence is complete. We understand that in this “mind of Eternity” we are sharing with Christ the surety of God’s Eternal Presence.

In this “Mind of Eternity” we comprehend the real meaning of the statement “Time is the moving image of Eternity”. We realise that the sequence of time events is but an abstraction of some of the infinite possibilities of Eternity, presented to us separately so that we can test our motives, search the depths of our souls,

find out what kind of beings we are willing to become.

Then we can see Time as it really is, a limited period of testing given to each soul so that each soul may design for itself by its own choice what kind of being it will be in all Eternity.

We are here in Time to choose what kind

of being we will to become.

Finally, our being will be what the totality

of our choices has made it.

Skrt. Svabhava

There is no escape from this.

Each choice that we make changes our character in some way.

Character is the result of our choices.

As we choose we model ourselves, our bodies, minds and souls.

Just as, if we repeatedly do a physical act, we predispose our body to become more able to do that act (as we see evidenced in the results of doing physical exercises), so if we repeatedly think in a certain way we predispose our mind to think more and more in this way.

We condition our physical body by doing certain physical actions.

We condition our mind to think in certain ways by thinking in a certain manner.

How do we condition our soul?

  1. By feeling about what we think and do,
  2. By liking and disliking what we think and do, or
  3. By allowing ourselves to be indifferent to our thoughts and actions.

Our soul is essentially a feeling being that takes attitudes of liking, disliking and indifference towards whatever it encounters. Of these three attitudes, that of indifference is strongly condemned in the Book of Revelation,

where the Laodiceans are told,

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot;
I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm,
and neither cold nor hot,
I will spew thee out of my mouth”.

So speaks God to the indifferent, the luke-warm.

Why should God so view the indifferent?

When we are indifferent, our energy does not flow through our being as it should.

Indifference is failure to commit ourselves to one course or another.

When we commit ourselves to a course of action

we mobilise our energy,

we enliven ourselves,

we vitalise our body and mind and soul.

Whether we “blow hot”, that is, feel intense interest towards something;

Or “blow cold”, that is, feel a strong opposition to something, we live more intensely, we mobilise our spirit.

Our life is on the way to greater abundance of experience, from which we will learn more about ourselves and about the world and everything in it.

But lukewarmness, indifference, does not vitalise us, does not mobilise our energies, does not enliven our spirit. Indifference persisted-in means loss of life-drive, loss of purpose. It is a first stage towards loss of the power to integrate ourselves, a first step towards corruption of being and failure to find a true centre of reference for our soul.


Aussie Cyborgs

Are we machines(cyborgs) or are we humans?
If we are humans then we have CHOICE.
But if the external world conditions our response, then we are machines – cyborgs – manipulable – and have no choice.

Are we cyborgs?
“Oh no” says everybody(except a few), we are humans. We can do what we like, do what we want..
But can we determine our likes?
If we are unable in every situation to determine our current and next ‘like’ absolutely, then to that extent we have no choice.

Our answer lies in saying YES to the question; “Do I like everything, always and everywhere in the whole of my life?
If there is a NO at all at any moment, then to that degree I am a cyborg, unable to determine my ‘likes’ absolutely.

Still with us?

What is choice ? What does it mean to be able to choose ?
The word implies an action, mental or physical, by which from a number of possible ideas or course of action we are able to select one rather than another and so to change our situation, or the environmental conditions under which we have to live.

The problem of choice has been a very thorny one for many centuries, because in it is involved that other difficult problem, the question of human personal responsibility.

How far are human beings justly held responsible for their actions?
Responsibility is liability to be called to account for our actions.
Behind the idea of responsibility is the idea of “ability to respond” [Response-ability].

That is a very important idea, which we will examine rather carefully. Many of our actions arise from some kind of stimulus received from our physical surroundings. Something happens in our environment and because of this happening we do something which, if it were not for this happening, we might not do.

The question is raised:

Does the external event compel our response,
or are we internally free to select from an unlimited
number of actions any particular one and to do this
without any compulsion from the outer stimulus?

Unless we have this capacity for free selection, which we call ‘CHOICE’, we cannot justly be held responsible for our actions.

But if we have no capacity for free selection of our actions, then in fact we are no better in this respect than a machine.

A cyborg is a machine, and just like the Terminator and a host of current characters, has no choice.

Vairagya – a depth interpretation by Eugene Halliday

[the knowing and affirming beforehand, where a desire, once released, will reach its term]

You have already seen in eternity all the possibilities of all the actions you can perform.

You have also seen in eternity, all punishments and rewards that can befall you, if you allow inertia to develop.

Now if your inertias rule you, you will just carry on in the temporal process serialising and getting knocked or rewarded by the inertias and the external forces.  And if you conquer this ‘serial’ mode of thinking, and learn to ‘feel simultaneously’ the whole field then you are able to perceive all the ways that you can act, and see all the rewards and punishments of these actions before they appear in the time process.  And that mode is very valuable.

The Yoga term for it, we’ve had it before, is Vairagya.  This is ‘a kind of higher indifference’, but it really means, when we cut the word,

to affirm(ya)

the desire(rag; or raging nature, the desire nature direction)

and see its term(Vai).

It says ‘if you let go of the serial presentation and see the simultaneity of events you will actually be able to see the way your rages or desireful impulses develop.

You see the end result of anything you might do.

And when you see it very, very clearly then if the thing is no good, you just let go of it.

You don’t have to fight with yourself.

You let go of it because it’s just no good.

And this state is related to the state called the higher indifference.

It’s the indifference of a man who does not sit on a hot plate when he knows it’s hot.  He’s not attached to sitting on hot plates because he knows they are hot.  Another fellow who doesn’t know they’re hot or doesn’t know they will be hot when he’s tied himself to it, all he has to wait is three seconds and it’s too hot.  When he doesn’t know that he commits himself to a serial process; and if he does know it and he stops the serial process cuts out the emotional tone and the attachment to the serial process, and without falling asleep does this then he gains simultaneous awareness of all his possibilities.  In doing this he sees all the things that can happen to him for any given position he stands on.  And when he does see them then he has no difficulty in controlling himself because he has conquered inertia and therefore he is not driven to do anything. Whatever he does it will not be inertic.  Whatever he exposes himself to it will not be inertic.

Once you have broken the pattern of inertia you can move across your circle putting a super-stress anywhere you like.  There is no question now of clockwise, anti-clockwise, of having to improve – the perfectionist mind, or having to degenerate – the fellow who has decided he’s no good and had better die.

These are two kinds of inertias:

  1. The Clockwise inertia – ‘I must improve, it is essential for my good name’;
  2. And the Anti-Clockwise inertia that says ‘Mother said I was no good in the first place, so I might as well get drunk and prove it now’.

These two kinds of inertias, the ‘improving perfectionist one’, and the ‘degenerating no good concept one’, are the two basic types that we find continuously operating in people.

Now as far as technique is concerned for doing this the rule is so simple that it never seems quite complicated enough for the mind that inertically seeks causes.

The rule is very simple ‘chop it’, if it’s ‘serial’, stop it.

And don’t try to think ‘why’ you should stop it, because why is a psychological question.

And don’t try to think ‘how’ you can stop it, because that is a mechanical question, just stop it.

Most people say, ‘How can I stop it?’ but how is a mechanical word. How tells you the process, the mechanical process.  There is no mechanical process whatever.  You just see it and you stop it.

Don’t ask yourself why because that’s a psychological question that says, “What is my motive in so doing?” Your motive in so doing is a very, very simple one – ‘you will to do it’.  You have no other motive.  If you say ‘In order to be comfortable,’ then you might as well stop straight away, because the attempt to stop serial thought can be uncomfortable initially.  So if it’s immediate comfort you want, you probably will give it up in a minute.  So don’t ask ‘why’ or ‘how’, but chop it.  Serial thought is the enemy of this simultaneous mode.

All workshops aim to show how the greatest teachings over the past 2600 years may be applied to the modern world and can be developed through Meditation, study and practice. Unless we apply the teachings now, they are no more than a burden on our lives, tying our mind to our past and our inertias and habits. Patanjali’s Yoga classic is about self rulership and self exploration – Raja Yoga

Any ruling system has rules upon which the system runs. Rules are rails, guides, definitions within which certain forces operate in particular ways, to the efficiency of the whole system.

We are in a historical period where in fact penitentiaries and gaols are full of individuals who do not like rules, or do not like the rules of the day. A recent announcement in the State of Victoria claimed that there were only 2 gaol cells remaining on a particular recent weekend into which could be placed a non-law-abiding citizen, even for something as small as drunkenness and disorderliness. All of the other cells in the State, thousands, were full of inmates. It seems not to be a question any more of how many cells can be built, how many gaol houses are available, how many penitentiaries can be constructed, somehow they are always full, or near to full, or overflowing, of inmates. Australia as a country does not stand alone in this concern.

Those of us who remain outside of the gaols for the time being are agreeing to abide by the rules of the community in which we live, at least sufficiently that we are not placed in gaol.

Ontologically, over centuries, man has tried to determine whether the rules come first, or whether the forces come first. There have been, and remain, 2 schools of thought in this dialectic.

Self-exploration, the gaining of self-knowledge, is one of the processes that the so-called “individual” aims to attain and build upon. In the process of self-exploration, certain rules are discovered. Since the early 1800s this process has been called existentialism. First the individual self has to exist, then over a process of development the rules of the game inside self-definition are discovered.

The process of individuality development in the world goes back at least 2000 years.

  • Some individuals decide to work for themselves.
  • Some individuals work for their community, friends, family, associates and associations.
  • Some individuals work for the wider world.
  • Some individuals work for the ideal of a god or divinity or creative source power beyond the wider world, in Cosmos as we say.
  • Some individuals aim to rub out their individuality and dissolve back to infinity; they aim to become nobody, or we could say nobody in particular, nobody special, nobody individual.
  • Some creative individuals aim to join in with the creative source power of the universe, as an agent. They use their individual agency for a very high purpose.

In any ruling system, individuals have differences of opinion about what kind of rules they will be ruled by. Transgressions to the rules of the system can lead the individual into a gaol.

  • Gaols can be physical, made of bricks and mortar and concrete and steel – a function of bodies and corporality.
  • Gaols can be mental – a function of forms, and formal relationships in the mind.
  • Gaols can be psychological – a function of limitation in feeling sensitivity and field consciousness.
  • Gaols can be spiritual – a function of limitations in sentience and power, consciousness and will, creative potential.

In this workshop we will be looking at the rules from a yoga and meditation standpoint. Yoga is the relationship which an individual has with the infinite creative source power of their being.

  • Some individuals believe this source power to be within them.
  • Some individuals believe the source power beyond their individuality.
  • Some individuals believe both viewpoints, simultaneously; not because they can’t make up their mind, but because they believe that the source power operates both immanently and transcendently to and of their being.

From the Yoga viewpoint, the creative source power is said to be in-finite, without definition, without limit. This would be to say that the creative source power, source of all beings, from the individual viewpoint, effectively has rules which transcend individual power and capacity. Spatially this would imply that the individual stands inside infinity, inside the rules of the creative source of individual being. Just like individual cells within the human body are internal functions of the whole body, so also individual beings inside the world, or Cosmos, the universe, or infinity beyond the universe, stand within a wider larger system.

Our workshop is about self-rulership, individual rulership and development.

If as individuals we don’t like an invisible infinity ruling us, or one of its finite representatives, we had better learn to rule ourselves.

If we choose to rule ourselves we have to learn the rules of good ruling.

To learn to rule ourselves it might be useful to first of all, get in contact with the original ruler of the universe, inside which we live and move and have our being.


Because This ruler has some very good rules and we would be wise to at least have a look at them before we start trying to rule our own little zone of influence, however big or small we feel ourselves to be, and whatever organisation we feel moved to rule or take control of.

Self-rulership is the key to individual life.


Bhagavad Gita – picking the essentials for Individual development

All true yogis are ‘individuals’ working to develop the relationship within themselves with their Absolute Source, the immanent Atman reconnecting back to the transcendence Source Brahman. “Seek first the Atman(heaven) within and all else will be added unto you“.

This workshop 

a. Explains what an “individual” is in the sacred sense.
b. Shows the steps to attainment as outlined in the Bhagavad Gita. 
As Krishna says, “It’s the most secret knowledge“.
c. Identifies what kind of capacities, talents and powers are to be expected when the attainment has been fulfilled, and what has to be sacrificed to gain the realisation.

Those who fail to take the journey remain as the mass of as yet non-self-selected forces conditioned by and subject to

    1. family and ancestral tendencies,
    2. communal mass responses and social influence,
    3. indoctrination originating in various organisations and establishments,
    4. group biases & various other determinants of action, most of them largely unconscious.
    5. internal body appetites governing self-behaviour and leading to disease, largely without awareness until manifested.

Getting Straight on Your Path


Your understanding of what the universe is all about changes as you proceed further along the path towards enlightenment. As your vantage point or perspective changes, you begin to understand more and more of “how it is.” With this greater understanding comes greater compassion… an acceptance of “how it is”… an ability to see the divine plan in everything, even in your failings and failings of others.

In the course of your journey it is most likely that your day-to-day companions or friends may change. Some may fall away as your interest in the Spirit pulls you from the worldly interest which brought or kept you together, but new friends who share your current interests will appear. Of course, some of your existing relationships will move easily into this new domain and the relationship will become deeper and calmer… coming to exist in the eternal present.

This transition as traveling companions is a delicate and troubling matter. To find that someone whom you assumed shared all your values and interests over many years has no interest whatsoever in enlightenment or in becoming more conscious or coming into the Spirit is a shock. You want to share this “trip” with them in the same way as you shared others in the past. That desire to proselytize, to turn him on, to show him, to bring him to the light… is a reflection of your lack of wisdom. For only some people can hear. Only some can awaken in this lifetime. It’s a little like seeing a friend drowning and being unable to catch his hand. You want so badly to do something. But in truth you can only BE… be as straight and as open and as HERE as you can be… and if your friend can hear, he will hear. And if he cannot hear, he will turn away from you. No blame.

What is important is that you get your house in order at each stage of the journey so that you can proceed. “If some day it be given to you to pass into the inner temple, you must leave no enemies behind.” – de Lubicz

This getting straight not only applies to people but to things as well, such as favorite music, disliked foods, special treats, avoided places, all your toys, etc. Everything must be rerun through your compassion machine. You must revisit, at least in meditation, all your old attachments and re-see them in the light of the Spirit. As you do, they fall away…unless, of course, the attachment to them is so strong that you are not able yet to re-see them with pure compassion. To stumble in that way on the path merely indicates the work yet to be done. Thus it gives direction to your sadhana, which is to work on those desires that cause you to stumble, by bringing them into the light of mantra or the witness until they fall away on their own.
